Metaplay, known for its fully customisable backend for game development, has debuted a Unity-based SDK to help developers scale their mobile games.

Developed over four years in collaboration with top-tier game studios in Helsinki – including Metacore, Dodreams, and Nitro – the Metaplay SDK is designed to empower developers and studios in creating top-tier online mobile games that can scale as they grow.

Teemu Haila, Co-Founder and CPO at Metaplay, said: “Since 2019, we’ve mostly been working with a few hand-picked game studios in Helsinki to build a game-making platform that, once they’ve started using, they can’t imagine their life without it.

“We (and they) can confidently say the result is better than anything else out there. Now, we couldn’t be more excited to introduce Metaplay to the world, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience the incredible things you can do with it.”

The new SDK introduces customisable and fully extensible workflows, libraries, and tooling previously available only to high-end studios. It enables professional game developers to build anything from simple single-player games to full real-time games with complex social interactions.

Metaplay addresses the challenges faced by developers due to the growing saturation of mobile gaming, making it difficult and expensive to test new game concepts. Often, developers resort to cheap backend tech to launch a minimum viable product quickly. However, if a title gains rapid popularity, scaling often becomes a significant challenge.

Metaplay’s solution lies in offering developers a robust and premade upgrade path, allowing them to scale their backend seamlessly as their game grows. The SDK comprises four component parts covering every aspect of game development, from initial code to LiveOps and player support.

The C# game server provided by Metaplay is pre-built with essential features of top-tier games but is fully customisable and extensible. Developers can add new features and modify existing ones easily, with the flexibility to deploy the source code into their own cloud for full control over their game and data.

Petri Kero, CEO and Co-Founder of Metaplay, commented: “We got tired of black-box backends holding us back when making games. So we made Metaplay, a full-stack platform with everything developers need to make a top-grossing game.

“Our goal has always been to take Metaplay global and help developers achieve true scale without being limited in their creative vision.”

Metaplay’s SDK starts at €995/month, providing access to a full suite of backend tech and tooling with the aim of democratising game development. This approach enables studios to focus on marketability, creative game ideas, and maximising their game’s chances of success.
