Apple has filed a trademark in New Zealand for ‘xrOS’ ahead of the company’s annual WWDC conference next month.

The wordmark filing all but confirms the official name of the operating system for its highly anticipated headset, along with the font and styling that will accompany it.

The discovery of the ‌xrOS‌ wordmark was made by Parker Ortolani, who spotted the registration with the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office.

Unsurprisingly, Apple will continue using its well-known San Francisco typeface for ‌xrOS‌, just as it does for its other operating systems like macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

‌xrOS‌, a term which stands for “extended reality,” encompasses both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) functionalities that the headset will support. The name had already been confirmed internally by Apple sources last year through a Bloomberg report.

During the development stage, Apple had referred to the headset’s software as other names including “Reality OS” and “rOS.” However, as the launch date drew near, the company appears to have decided to go for a more distinctive and less generic name.

According to reports, ‌xrOS‌ will boast an interface similar to iOS, providing a familiar user experience for Apple enthusiasts. The Home screen will feature customisable app icons that can be rearranged to suit individual preferences, along with the inclusion of customisable widgets.

Moreover, the headset will introduce updated versions of popular apps such as Maps and Messages, which have been specially redesigned to deliver an immersive AR/VR experience. Apple is also working on a software development kit (SDK) to enable third-party developers to create applications for the headset, expanding its capabilities even further.

Apple is expected to officially unveil the highly anticipated headset during its WWDC keynote event on June 5th. This announcement will undoubtedly generate significant excitement and speculation within the tech industry and among Apple fans worldwide.
